This helmet was 27 years old by the time it finally broke. It was in my backpack, for a climb later that day, when I sat on everything (as is my custom to avoid sitting in the snow) when I heard something “pop.” Obviously the helmet was much too old, and probably weakened from all the UV rays, to have been of any safety value during the actual climb. Lesson learned…

Oh, there were two UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) stickers in the helmet. One said, “UIAA Bull. 93” and the other was somewhat worn, and hard to read but said, “Herst.: vauDe Jahr: 1989 Typ: Acute DIN7948 Gew.: ~400
